Founded in 1661, Mamaroneck is one of Westchester’s oldest settlements. The town is made up of two villages, Larchmont and the Village of Mamaroneck as well as a large Unincorporated Area. Larchmont, on the Long Island Sound, was a popular summer resort for families in the 1890s as well as a haven for those fleeing the city and polio and flu epidemics. Today, Mamaroneck has a population of around 30,000. With easy access to the city via Metro North and abundant water views, the town is very popular with families of commuters.Town website: www.townofmamaroneck.org Public schools: www.mamkschools.org
As for recreation, the town offers a wide variety of programs for both children and adults including camps, golf, swimming, hockey, ice skating and tennis. Hommocks Park has an Olympic sized pool and a large ice rink. Opened in 1923, the Winged Foot Golf Club has hosted many PGA championships and the 2006 US Open. An interesting tidbit, written for a school play by a student’s lyricist father, the song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” had its debut in Mamaroneck.
